I tried the Original Musgrave gin – review

A few months ago, I was gifted a bottle of gin, not your ordinary gin but one that came all the way from South Africa and delivered to me through a local representative. We (my whole family and I) tasted the gin and here’s what we think about it.

Gin and Tonic are becoming very popular these days over traditional vodka and rum. One good thing about Gin is that you can craft it into great cocktails to rock your parties.

Musgrave Gin

Musgrave Gin is dedicated to the founder, Simone’s grandfather, who left Plymouth in 1949 to begin a new life in the heart of Africa. As you know Africa is very popular for its wines and gins with the use of indigenous botanical by distilleries. The gin was launched in 2015 by grand-daughter Simone Musgrave.

It comes in two variants, the Original Musgrave 11 and Musgrave Pink. It features a botanical blend of cardamom, African ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and grains of paradise to name a few. Musgrave Pink gets its pink color from an additional ingredient, rose-hip, giving it a delicate perfume and exotic flavor. It is bottled at 43% ABV with 750ml content.

Although the brand is quite new, it features among the top gins in South Africa winning a silver award in 2016.

I had a lot of fun crafting my own drink with Musgrave gin. Here’s a simple recipe for the mojito that I served during New Year party as welcome drink (for around 15 people).

2L 7up or Sprite

1 Lemon (Sliced)

1 glass of Musgrave Original Gin (as per your preference)

A handful of mint leaves

3 tbsp of sugar

Ice

Mix it all and serve.

I would definitely like to try it in cocktails. With its strong spiced aroma, I found that the Original Musgrave Gin blended well in the mojito. You can purchase your bottle at any Intermart Outlets.

Simone held a masterclass event in partnership with HVC Ltd at Sugar Beach, Mauritius where she spent the afternoon with the influencers. Unfortunately, I couldn’t attend the event as I was medically unfit to go out.
