South-West of Mauritius is full of exciting places to visit such as nature reserves, waterfalls, quaint villages, beautiful beaches, scenic routes and not to forget, an array of luxury resorts that make a perfect weekend getaway. As such, Bel Ombre is home to many picturesque spots.
Hey, no trip to Mauritius is complete without a hotel stay.
Tamassa resort checked! Heritage resort checked! C-Beach Club checked! Our pick for a girls’ weekend escape was Outrigger resort & spa which is a 5-star hotel in Bel Ombre. Outrigger Mauritius beach resort is also based in Maldives, Thailand, Hawaii, Fiji and Guam.
It took us around an hour by car to reach the hotel from our hometown. Check-in was at 3 pm and the process was very quick. After having our welcome drink, the host gave us a little tour of the hotel.
Rooms at Outrigger
All the 181 rooms are sea-facing and well-equipped. Our Beachfront room allowed glimpses of the ocean and the best thing was being near one of the swimming pools. Our room was really big with a king-sized bed, a sofa bed and complimentary bottled water was provided.
Deluxe Sea-view Rooms come with a king bed or two twin beds with en-suite bathroom and a balcony within 63sqm. Family Deluxe Sea-view Rooms are bigger with a separate room for kids with bunk beds and TV for the children as well. Deluxe Beachfront Rooms/Deluxe family beachfront rooms provide direct access to the beach with the same features as the Deluxe Sea-view Room.
Beachfront Junior/Senior Suites both have an open plan bedroom and living room, a whirlpool bath and an outdoor garden shower. Guests of the suites can enjoy The Plantation Club facilities.
In addition, for big families, the Beachfront villa is the best option with two senior suites, separate kids connecting room and a deluxe beachfront room. The villa can accommodate six adults and six children. Guests can also enjoy the Plantation Club facilities.
We had all our meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) at Mercado Restaurant which is the hotel’s main eating place. The dining concept at Mercado is amazing with a great culinary variety. There is an area dedicated for Indian food, a corner for Chinese food etc. Tea time is not provided unless you have access to La Plantation Club. Guests who booked suites or villas can enjoy la Plantation Club which comprises of a private pool, a restaurant, tea room and an outdoor lounge. The guests can also enjoy cocktail hours and drinks all day.
The wine room at Outrigger offers tasting experience of over 700 vintage wines. If you have cravings for seafood and some good rums, head to Willie’s Rum & Crab Shack – reservations are required for dinner. Edge-water is another restaurant offering spectacular views of the ocean where you can enjoy Mauritian food, European and Asian cuisines. For a variety of cocktails and snacks, head to Bar Bleu.
As for entertainment, other than four swimming pools including one with water slide for children, you can enjoy land sports such as table tennis, volleyball, bocciball and sea activities such as windsurf, pedal boats, kayak, snorkeling and glass-bottom boat trips. There are others activities that you can enjoy at a supplement such as quad biking, deep sea fishing, kite surfing, golfing and PADI diving. There is a children’s club on site (Coral kids) for those aged 3-11 years. Yoga sessions, sauna, hammam and aromatherapy massages can be enjoyed at Navasana Spa. There is also a fitness centre on site.
To sum up, we had a lazy but awesome weekend at Outrigger Mauritius Beach Resort. Our host pampered us with complimentary drinks and a cake. Check out was at noon but we could stay at the hotel till 5pm.
